            Why are red pandas tracked?

            Given their mountainous habitat and elusive nature, red pandas are difficult to spot in the wild. Tracking these arboreal mammals provides valuable insights into their movement ecology and behavior. Such information is critical for effective conservation planning.

            How are red pandas tracked?

            The radio telemetry relies on the very high frequency (VHF) signals emitted by the transmitter attached to the collar, which need to be tracked manually using an antenna. The researchers have to be on the ground to locate their frequencies. On the other hand, GPS telemetry uses satellite systems to record locations at certain intervals, which can be tracked remotely without being in the field.

            Does tracking harm the red pandas?

            Available studies have reported no or negligible harm to animals while tracking them using these devices.
